Celebrate Warm Weather with DIY Frozen Chalk

School is almost out for the summer, which means kids everywhere will be ready for a fun-filled season! After this past year, the children in your life are likely bursting with energy. Promote outdoor activities and stay cool in the heat with frozen chalk, a fun DIY project and science experiment to keep the kids creative while school is out.

If you haven’t heard of the new trend of frozen chalk, also called ice chalk or popsicle chalk, we’re here with the 411. With simple household ingredients, endless creative possibilities for kids, and easy clean-up for parents, ice chalk is the way to go this summer. Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. Cornstarch
  2. Food coloring or washable paint
  3. Water
  4. Ice or popsicle tray

Now that you’ve gathered your ingredients, follow these steps to make your own chalk:

  1. Mix ¼ cup cornstarch, ¼ cup water, and 2 tbsp of paint.
  2. Stir the mixture and pour into popsicle molds or ice tray.
  3. Freeze overnight.
  4. Run molds briefly under warm water to release your chalk.
  5. Find a blank canvas and chalk away!

Pro tip: If you don’t have a ton of colors to choose from, get primary color paint and have fun mixing your own colors. Let the kids try different ratios of colors and see what fun shades they come up with.

Ice chalk is a fun, interactive activity to get kids out of the house and into the sun—just don’t forget to lather on the sunscreen to stay safe. With an easy DIY recipe, this is sure to be a hit this summer.
