Improvements to Manakin Farms Wastewater Treatment Facility will optimize operations and reduce landfill sludge

Aqua Virginia today announced it has successfully completed a significant upgrade project at its Manakin Farms Wastewater Treatment Facility in Goochland County. The sludge dewatering process improvement upgrades are designed to improve the efficiency of the wastewater treatment process and reduce the facility’s environmental footprint.

The project included the installation of new dewatering screw press equipment housed in a prefabricated concrete building with associated site improvements.   In normal wastewater treatment operations, wastewater sludge (processed solids) is disposed of at local landfills in accordance with state and local regulations. By reducing the liquid content of sludge, the facility can send less material to landfills. Additionally, the new dewatering equipment incorporates a conveyor system, enhancing safety for operational staff.

“Aqua Virginia is committed to investing in high-quality water and wastewater solutions for customers,” said Aqua Virginia President John Aulbach. "The improvements at the Manakin Farms Wastewater Treatment Facility will optimize our daily operations, ensuring more efficient and sustainable wastewater services for the community."

This investment is part of Aqua’s continuing infrastructure improvement program to replace decades-old water and wastewater infrastructure around the country. Similar upgrades are planned for other facilities in the region, including Lake Land’or in Caroline County and Lake Holiday in Frederick County.
