Ongoing work is part of program to replace lead and galvanized service lines throughout the state; improves system reliability and protects public health
Aqua Pennsylvania announced its customer-owned service line inventory study in Abington Township, Montgomery County is nearly 75% complete. The study is part of a statewide initiative to replace lead and galvanized water service lines. Since the start of 2026, Aqua has performed 8,245 customer-owned service line surveys. Based on survey results to date, more than 260 service lines in Abington Township have been identified for replacement.
To maximize efficiency and minimize disruption, Aqua is grouping the identified service lines into a focused replacement project scheduled for 2027. Aqua will complete these replacements at no direct cost to the customer.
Service lines are divided into two sections: a utility-owned portion and a customer-owned portion. Typically, the utility-owned section extends from the water main in the street to the curb stop located at the curb or property line. The customer-owned section extends from that curb stop into the customer’s home or building.
“We are committed to protecting our customers’ drinking water from contaminants like lead,” said Aqua Pennsylvania President Marc Lucca. “Aqua already treats drinking water to prevent the leaching of lead, but by replacing these aging pipes that deliver water into homes and businesses we are taking an extra step to reduce the risk to our customers.”
Customers who have not yet completed the survey are encouraged to participate to ensure accurate identification of service line materials and to help advance this important initiative. They can learn more about the Aqua Pennsylvania’s Lead Service Line Replacement Program by going to our website.
Since starting our work on customer-owned service lines in 2024, Aqua Pennsylvania completed nearly 3,000 replacements across the Commonwealth. That number will continue to grow as Aqua advances its commitment to provide safe, reliable water for neighborhoods throughout the service area.
